Attempted Murder Charge - A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an alleged hit-and-run in Westcliff

A 26-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after an alleged hit-and-run in Westcliff left a pedestrian in a “critical condition.”
An air ambulance landed in Chalkwell Park Police and emergency services were called after a “serious collision” was reported in nearby Crowstone Road on Thursday, April 16th.
Members of the public were urged to avoid the area as police and ambulance services attended the incident, which was first reported at 7.30 am.
The man struck by the vehicle was given immediate treatment from members of the public, police officers and paramedics.
The victim, a 50-year-old man, (at the time of writing) remains in hospital after the incident.
The air ambulance and emergency services left the park at around 10 am, but a police cordon remained in place for most of the day, blocking access to Crowstone Road for around six hours.
Essex Police believe a stolen car crashed into the pedestrian.
A white Mercedes was reported to have struck the man before leaving the scene.
The car, described as a white Mercedes C-Class with the registration YD14 OHT and believed to have been taken from Sutton Road, was recovered nearby after being reportedly stolen from an address in Southend at 1 am.
A man was subsequently located in Southend and arrested on attempted murder on Friday April 17th.
James Wallace, 26, of no fixed abode, was charged with attempted murder and handling stolen goods, and remanded in custody to appear at Basildon Magistrates Court.
Neighbourhood policing teams were also patrolling the area, after the incident.
Speaking after the incident, Martin Terry, cabinet member for community safety and regulatory services, said: “It is concerning to see the second or third crash in the city in recent days. It reminds us we all we can should take every care we can, particularly with keeping our speeds down.
“I hope the parties involved in this and anyone injured recovers well.”
Detectives are still appealing for information about the movement of the Mercedes, in particular in areas of Sutton Road, Crowstone Road and Britannia Road on Thursday, April 16th.
Anyone who saw the car in the area or has relevant footage is asked to come forward.
A police spokesman said: “Detectives are continuing a number of inquiries across the Westcliff and wider Southend area as they work to establish the circumstances of the collision and identify a suspect.”
The police have added that their investigations involve CCTV inquiries, forensic examinations, and door-to-door visits.
Poel with information or who saw the vehicle are urged to get in touch via their Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP) at: https://mipp.police.uk/operation/4201020119Z99-PO1
