MARK Francois MP has attended a dinner with comrades from his local Regiment, to commemorate a key victory in the Regiment’s history.
Rayleigh & Wickford MP, Mr Francois, who served as a TA infantry officer in the local Royal Anglian Regiment, during the Cold War, was a guest at the recent ‘Salamanca Dinner’ where the Regiment traditionally commemorate one of their principal battle honours – capturing the ‘Essex Eagle’ from Napoleon’s 62nd Infantry Regiment, at the battle of Salamanca, during the Peninsula War.
The event, which was organised by No 3 (Essex and Herts) Company of the Regiment’s current 3rd battalion, was held at the Springfield Army Reserve Centre, Chelmsford and was presided over by Colonel Charles Thomas, the regimental Colonel for Essex (who Mr Francois served alongside, during the 1980s).
Speaking about the special commemorative event, Mr Francois said: “The Royal Anglian’s are Essex’s local infantry regiment, so it was a pleasure to be invited to this dinner to celebrate one of their greatest achievements.
“On a personal level, it was also very nice to see Colonel Charles again, who was a Major, when I served as a young TA Lieutenant, back when the Berlin Wall was still up.
“It was a very enjoyable evening.”
