DAVID Burton-Sampson says he was delighted to meet with charity, Carers First and other agencies at his special surgery.
Representatives from Essex Police, Citizens Advice, the Department of Work and Pensions and the charity SNAP, who support families with children who have additional needs or disabilities, were also on hand to speak to residents.
Carers First told the MP for Southend West and Leigh about the 15,000 unpaid carers in Southend that they know of, but added that there are also many people who do not class themselves as carers, despite fulfilling the role.
Mr Burton-Sampson said he is is committed to championing the needs of care givers in Parliament. He added: “It was important to discuss the issues surrounding unpaid carers, particularly younger children, who often help look after parents.
“It was shocking to learn that some children take up caring roles when they are only five years old.”
He spoke to the Service Manager for Essex, Emma Summers, who has 20 years of experience in the field.
“There is clearly a lack of recognition for child carers and it needs to be on their school system’s records. Say a father has to go away for work reasons, however temporarily, then the child takes on the mantle of carer.”
Mr Burton-Sampson has promised support to Carers First for local events and to work in parliament to increase awareness.
