Experience Ecstatic Dance

LEIGH is set to welcome the return of a series of ‘ecstatic dance’ events, offering local residents a chance to explore movement, music and mindfulness in a welcoming community setting.
The events, titled Move Into Being: Ecstatic Dance, are hosted by Leigh-based practitioners Monica Chatterjee and John Metcalf, and are held at both Strictly Smartz and Leigh Community Centre.
The alcohol-free sessions invite participants to dance barefoot to a DJ-led mix of world, tribal, house, garage and electronic music, framed as a form of “moving meditation” rather than a conventional club night.
Monica brings a background in 1990s underground dance culture and meditation practices alongside her professional experience as a Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapist.
John came to ecstatic dance through Monica and draws on over 15 years of Buddhist practice, alongside his work as a Permaculture gardener, where connection to the land informs his creative approach.
Upcoming Move Into Being: Ecstatic Dance session on Saturday 21 February at Leigh Community Centre running from 6.15pm to 9.30pm. The programme continues with a further afternoon dance at Strictly Smartz on Sunday 22 March (2pm–5pm), before concluding with a final evening session at Leigh Community Centre on Saturday 25 April, from 6.15pm to 9.30pm.
Each session begins with a short-guided meditation and warm-up, followed by open dance and a gentle closing.
The events are substance-free, open to beginners, and for adults aged 18 and over.
