A LEIGH man is undertaking a mammoth walk, in aid of two charities.

Reece Matthew, 32, is trekking from Lands’ End to John O’Groats in a 1,105-mile challenge spanning the UK from its southernmost to its northernmost point.

Mr Matthew explains: “Inspired by the incredible feats of legends like Ashley Cain, Russ Cook, Jake Dearden, and others, I’ve set myself a meaningful challenge.

“While I may not be tackling the world’s longest runs like them, I’ve discovered my strength lies in walking for hours on end.”

Mr Matthew is raising money for Cystic Fibrosis Trust and Cancer Research UK, after he was closely impacted by both diseases.

His mother is battling leukaemia, whilst his grandfather passed away from lung cancer.

In addition, a friend of eight years has been living with cystic fibrosis, meaning he has seen the impact first hand of illnesses.

He said: “This journey is about more than personal achievement; it’s about giving back.

“If I manage to reach my fundraising goal of £20,000 before reaching John O’Groats, I’ll turn around and walk back.

“This adventure is not about personal gain, but about making a tangible difference in the lives of others.”

The 42-day trek has been charted by Mr Matthew himself, “passing through the nation’s stunning national parks and areas of natural beauty, with a climb up Ben Nevis for good measure,” as he explains.

So far, he has struggled through torrential rain and tough terrain.

He added: “I have hit the hardest spots already I fell.

“As long as I can keep the pace up, I will make it.”
