IF you have been affected by cancer, as many of us have, according to MP David Burton-Sampson, you can take heart from the government’s new National Cancer Strategy.
The MP for Southend West and Leigh says he is delighted that the newly opened LINAC machine at Southend Hospital means faster and more targeted treatment for patients.
He said: “Our new LINAC machine really fits in with the government’s drive for patients to receive faster diagnoses leading to quicker treatment.
“This second new state-of-the-art radiotherapy machine is just what we need. I am told it has a new way to take images, which is quicker and will produce one of higher quality.
“I am sure that like me, most people have been experienced the impact of cancer, with one of your relatives or one of your friends. Unfortunately, one in two of us will experience cancer during our lifetimes, so I cannot stress enough how important the new National Cancer strategy is. It will make a real difference this Parliament and beyond.”
The landmark new National Cancer Plan aims to ensure that 75% of patients diagnosed from 2035 will be cancer-free or living well after five years and hundreds of thousands more patients will be treated within 62 days by 2029.
Mr Burton-Sampson added:” I was delighted to attend a Cancer Research presentation in parliament. It’s an absolutely amazing organization that I have so much time and respect for. They do so much outstanding work which helps drive up survival rates for cancer patients.
“Here in Southend West and Leigh there are around 460 new cancer cases every year and this National Cancer Plan is an opportunity to ensure every one of them gets the support they need.”
