Leigh Candidate Announced - LONG standing Leigh Councillor, Carole Mulroney has been selected by the Liberal Democrats to stand for re-election in Southend City’s election in May.
LONG standing Leigh Councillor, Carole Mulroney has been selected by the Liberal Democrats to stand for re-election in Southend City’s election in May.
A statement issued by the Local Lib Dems said: “Carole is a well-known and an excellent proactive Councillor who passionately cares for her beloved Leigh and Southend.
“She has been at the forefront of actions to protect the heritage and community over many years. Her dedication to Leigh Town Council, to bring it back from the brink of collapse is legendary. She also has been leading the funding from government to rebuild Leigh Port for generations to come.
“Without her constant pressure, the now planned works for our Port and dredging the channel would have been lost.
“Carole lives in the heart of Leigh, and she is often found managing the Leigh Heritage Centre on a voluntary basis and at the Community Centre working as a volunteer with our senior citizens.
“She believes passionately in teaching future generations about our past which is so important to make sure it is not forgotten. But she does not live in the past, she looks forward to all Leigh can and will be in the future if it is served well by its councillors and community.
“Her involvement in local works and organisations from the WI to the Heritage Centre shows a deep rooted commitment to Leigh that has never wavered or lessened over the years.
Coun Mulroney added: “Leigh means everything to me, through my ancestry and my love of history.
“But there is no one person who is the voice of Leigh, it speaks for itself as a community and needs a councillor who will speak up for it and with it. For 20 years I have done just that, whether its campaigns to save the Library, protecting the Old Town (there is a scheme in the offing to ease the traffic problems) or protecting our vital fishing port.
“Residents know they can approach me anytime and even though I may not be able to help directly, I will always explain and investigate their issues. Anyone who promises the moon is not acting in the best interests of Leigh, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t aim high. We have a mind of our own and I will always work to preserve that.”
The Lib Dem group leader, Coun Paul Collins said: “Carole is a vital member of the Liberal Democrat team in Southend.
“Her experience in heritage and planning is second to none on the Council, and she is listened to. Her Liberal roots go very deep. The Liberal Democrat Councillors from Leigh have always been respected by all members of the City Council because they are local people and they work within the community.
“Carole has been pivotal in bringing progressive change to Leigh. The new Leigh Link bus service and return of a bus service to Highlands Boulevard are all Liberal Democrat environmental initiatives.
“The introduction of the 20mph zone around roads off Glendale Gardens is also a demonstration of her work for the safety of the community. Which is why we look forward to Carole being returned by the residents of Leigh in May to continue her excellent work for them and the City as a whole.
