Endeavour’s Centenary Events

LEIGH’s beloved ‘Little Ship’ is 100 years old this year.
To celebrate, The Endeavour Trust is holding a special centenary dinner on November 6th in honour of the heroic boat that saved lives during World War II.
The event will be held at the Boatyard Restaurant, fittingly located in the Old Town, from where the Endeavour, along with five other ‘Leigh bawleys’ set out for Dunkirk as part of Operation Dynamo.
Alongside the Endeavour were Defender, Letitia, Reliance, Renown, and Resolute.
The eye-catching green bawley is now a piece of continuity with that national history, lovingly restored and maintained by The Endeavour Trust since 2001.
Built in 1926 at the instruction of Harry Robinson, the Endeavour had been a fishing boat, designed for catching cockles in the shallow waters of the Essex coast, for over 14 years before called up to take part in the momentous operation in the north of France, between 26 May and 4 June 1940.
This year’s centenary dinner on November 6th will honour both the Endeavour’s 100-year history, as well as remembering those who were lost in The Renown, whose crew never made it home.
Alongside the November dinner, there will also be a Summer Reception at Osbornes, to celebrate the 100 years in the warm sunshine.
Other plans include the production of a special centenary book on The Endeavour’s history, which The Endeavour Trust are currently working on.
