Council’s Measles Message

THERE is currently a significant measles outbreak in North London, and some children have been hospitalised.
A Southend Council statement said: “Because of our close proximity and direct transport links to the capital, it is highly likely that cases will occur in Essex, Southend and Thurrock.
“Measles spreads very easily, and unvaccinated children are at high risk of becoming unwell. Vaccination is the safest, most effective way of protecting your child from serious illness.
“We are asking all parents and carers to check their child’s vaccination record. If your child is not up to date with their MMR vaccines, please arrange vaccination as soon as possible.
“You can get your child protected by contacting: East of England Community and School-Aged Immunisation Service: 0300 555 5055 (option 6) or email [email protected] or your GP practice.
“Guidance for parents on measles is available on the GOV.UK website. General measles information, symptoms, and advice can be found on the NHS website.
“Guidance for parents on what to do if you think your child has measles and when to keep them off school is available on The Education Hub website.
Krishna Ramkhelawon, Director of Public Health Southend Council, said: “We know the news of measles cases nearby can be worrying for families, but I want to reassure parents and carers that there is a simple and very effective way to protect children.
“The MMR vaccine has been safely used for many years and offers excellent protection. Checking your child’s vaccination status and getting any missed doses will help keep them safe, especially while measles is circulating more widely. Our local health teams are here to support you, and taking this step now will give you confidence and peace of mind.
