A SOUTH Essex MP learnt more about the local sewage system during a visit to a water treatment works in his constituency.
Rayleigh & Wickford MP, Mark Francois, visited Anglian Water’s Treatment Plant at Shotgate, near Wickford and was briefed on the company’s operations there.
As part of the briefing, Mr Francois learnt how constraints in sewage capacity are now becoming a major impediment to extra house-building in South Essex, as the ageing infrastructure cannot cope with the extra demand from so many potential new households.
Speaking about his visit, Mr Francois said: “We often take water supplies and sewage systems for granted, so it was a real education to see a plant in action and learn how the system really works.
“It’s now clear to me that this is exactly the kind of infrastructure which needs major investment in more capacity, before we even consider additional major housing developments in my constituency.”
