Dangerous Driving Targeted

ROADS Policing Unit officers carried out a dedicated road safety operation on Saturday 7 March as part of Operation Limit, focusing on Castle Point and the Rochford district.
The proactive activity forms part of ongoing efforts to reduce serious collisions, challenge dangerous driving, and keep communities safe by targeting those intent on drug or drink driving.
Speeding, particularly in 30mph residential areas, continues to pose a persistent risk across the district. These roads are designed to protect pedestrians, cyclists, and local residents, yet officers repeatedly encounter drivers travelling at unsafe and illegal speeds.
During the operation, officers stopped and assessed hundreds of vehicles, issuing enforcements where drivers chose to ignore the law and put others at risk.
Throughout the day, officers recorded:
• 149 speeding offences – all in 30mph zones
• 133 Traffic Offence Reports (TORs)
• 8 vehicle seizures
• 18 arrests, of which:
o 16 were for drink or drug driving
o 2 were for possession with intent to supply (PWITS)
• 1 PG9 prohibition notice issued – the vehicle was deemed too dangerous to drive any further
A police statement said: “Too many drivers continue to underestimate the consequences of speeding and driving under the influence.
“Speeding in 30mph zones dramatically increases the chance of a serious or fatal collision, especially in built up areas. Meanwhile, drink or drug driving remains one of the ‘fatal four’ causes of killed and seriously injured collisions death on UK roads.
“Operations like this are essential – not only to identify offenders, but to send a clear message that dangerous driving will not be tolerated in Essex.
“Op Limit takes place regularly across the county, combining specialist roads policing officers and intelligence led deployments. Each operation is designed to target the behaviours most likely to cause harm on our roads and reassure residents that police are actively tackling road safety concerns.
“Essex Police will continue to carry out these high visibility patrols and enforcement activities, ensuring that those who break the law face robust action.”
