Illegal Pavement Parking - GREEN Party candidates in Leigh are calling for urgent action to tackle the growing problem of illegal pavement parking
GREEN Party candidates in Leigh are calling for urgent action to tackle the growing problem of illegal pavement parking, which they say is putting pedestrians at risk and damaging the character of the area.
Anita Forde, Green Party candidate for Leigh ward, says the issue has become normalised across the town, with drivers mounting pavements and even parking directly outside shops.
She said, “I’ve experienced this myself outside my hairdressers on London Road, but shop owners are also telling us this is happening on Rectory Grove and elsewhere.
“It’s dangerous, especially for children, and it makes Leigh look less like a community and more like a car park.”
Coun Stuart Allen says the party has received a growing number of complaints from residents.
He said, “Pavements should be safe, accessible spaces for everyone. Right now, too many people are being forced into the road because cars are blocking the way. That’s completely unacceptable.
“We need practical, well-designed solutions in key hotspots, including bollards where appropriate, alongside better enforcement. Other European towns and cities have shown this can be done properly, protecting pedestrians without creating new hazards.”
The issue was recently raised at Full Council by Green candidate for Belfairs, Lauren Ekins. In response, the Leader of the Council acknowledged the concerns, but suggested bollards are not always suitable, citing potential impacts on footway width and accessibility.
