14 Months For Strangling

A MAN from Leigh has been jailed for 14 months for strangling a woman in Westcliff last year. The woman survived.
Erhan Ozdemir, 41, of Pavilion Drive, Leigh, admitted the offence as part of a plea bargain on what would have been the first day of his trial.
He pleaded guilty to one count of intentional strangulation of a woman in Westcliff in September 2025
After he pleaded guilty to that offence, a second charge of making threats to kill the same woman was allowed to lie on file.
Judge John Bristow sentenced Ozdemir to 14 months in prison at Basildon Crown Court on Monday, April 13.
He also imposed a restraining order which banned him from contacting the woman directly or going to any address he knows or believes her to be.
The order will last until April 2030.
