OLD Leigh Artists’ Market will return to Strand Wharf on Bank Holiday Monday, May 4, marking its 12th edition with another celebration of the finest local talent.
The popular event will once again transform the historic Old Town setting into an open-air gallery, with artists exhibiting a wide variety of work including paintings, ceramics, mosaics and photography. Some of the exhibitors will also be creating pieces live during the day, giving visitors the opportunity to watch them at work and discuss their techniques and inspiration.
Among the artists featured this year is Liz Cooper, whose seascapes and still-life work are a long-time favourite with artists’ market regulars. She said: “I like to paint moments in time which move me.
“I am interested in ‘how things fall’ and so prefer subjects to be a little unguarded or under composed.”
There will also be an opportunity to discover the world of gel plate printing with Phil Steed, who uses botanicals to create unique, layered prints. He said: “Unplug, slow down and get your hands inky!”
There is always something surprising to find at Old Leigh Artists’ Market — ceramicist Madelaine Hanman Murphy set up a stand last year as the “Creativity GP” and offered friendly advice to anybody feeling “disengaged or flat.”
She said: “It was a blast! For a day, I made myself available if someone wanted a chat.
“The response was amazing — how honest people are, how much struggle there is underneath it all, how people use creativity for escapism and pleasure.”
Organiser John Pearman said he was delighted to see the market reach its 12th edition: “We are very proud that the market has continued to grow and develop over the years.
“It has become an important opportunity for local artists to showcase their work and for visitors to discover the depth of creative talent in the area.”
He also paid tribute to the support the event has received from both Leigh Town Council and the wider community.
“Leigh Town Council has helped us establish and sustain the market, and we are extremely grateful for that,” he said. “The response from visitors has also been tremendous, and it is encouraging to see so many people returning year after year.”
With its lively atmosphere and diverse range of artwork in such a delightful setting overlooking the estuary, the market promises to be an ideal way to enjoy the bank holiday.
Old Leigh Artists’ Market will take place on Strand Wharf on Bank Holiday Monday, May 4, from 10am to 4pm.
