P New bus route connects Leigh and Hospital 349
New Bus Route - A new bus route set to launch this summer will connect Leigh and Leigh rail station with Southend Hospital.
A new bus route set to launch this summer will connect Leigh and Leigh rail station with Southend Hospital.
The number 26 bus will bring a public transport connection to the Southend University Hospital from areas across the city.
Coun Paul Collins, Southend Council cabinet member for finance, assets and public transport, reported the route will also bring residents additional access to the c2c service as it is set to stop near to Leigh Railway Station.
He explained that the route will run every hour through the day from Monday through to Saturday, and will launch on June 1 this year.
Coun Collins said: “The more we may do to offer residents an alternative to using the car, the better.
“The number of residents that want to visit the Hospital is increasing, and we feel this will allow more people to reach it with just one bus journey.”
A full route was shared by the councillor, featuring the following stops, but it is yet to be confirmed by First Bus.
The service will be operated by First Bus, who operate several routes in the city.
The route is: Shoeburyness East Beach; Cambridge Town; Delaware Road; Maplin Way North; Bournes Green; Southchurch Road; Travel Centre; Victoria Avenue; Southend Hospital; Blenheim Chase; Eastwood Road; Leigh Elms; Leigh Town Centre & Station; Thames Drive and Hadleigh Bus Garage
A spokesperson for the bus company said they were finalising a series of changes across the network, and would be notifying customers.
Coun Collins said: “Southend Council have agreed to run a daytime hourly bus service from Shoeburyness to Leigh and Hadleigh running past the General Hospital.
“It will bring communities, such as Shoeburyness East Beach and Cambridge Town along with Bournes Green and Southchurch Road with a direct bus service to the Hospital.
“In the west of Southend, it increases a bus service through West Leigh, and Blenheim Chase to link up with the Hospital and the rest of Southend.
“As this new route 26 runs next to Leigh Rail Station, it will also give new connections with c2c train service.”
