VE Day Party

MEMBERS of a parish church in the Rochford District came together to celebrate VE day with cakes, fellowship, and praise.
Members of St. Mary’s and All Saints Church, Great Stambridge, organised a special tea party following their morning worship on Sunday, May 10.
The day, in honour of 81st anniversary of “Victory in Europe” (VE) Day on May 8th, was attended by residents from across the parish, who came together to reminisce over tea, cake and sandwiches, and to enjoy special keepsake gifts distributed by younger members.
The well-attended gathering brought together many generations, offering a moment of community in the heart of the parish.
Great Stambridge, situated on Stambridge Road, is an ancient church dating back to before the Norman Conquest in 1066, making it one of only 10 remaining Saxon churches still standing in Essex.
Recently threatened with closure, members of the parish have pulled together to breathe new life into the church, with both an eye to growing the congregation and observing its many community traditions for future generations.
The VE Day party was the idea of parish member Leona, who organised the event for the enjoyment of the local community, and to encourage others to come along to the church and enjoy what it has to offer.
A spokesperson said: “We would love to welcome new members to our beautiful church – do come along and say hello!”
A service takes place at Great Stambridge every Sunday at 11 am, followed by tea and coffee in the church hall; all are welcome.
