Illegal E-scooters Seized - FOLLOWING complaints about illegally ridden e-bikes and e-scooters in the Rochford area
FOLLOWING complaints about illegally ridden e-bikes and e-scooters in the Rochford area, neighbourhood policing officers have been mounting plain clothes patrols to tackle the issue.
And they seized three high-powered e-scooters recently in West Road, Rochford, for being ridden without insurance.
Inspector David Thompson explained that it is only legal to use an e-scooter on the road as part of a of a Government-regulated scheme or to use a privately-owned scooter on private land.
“Unless you are riding a privately-owned e-scooter on private land, it is illegal to ride one anywhere in Rochford district,” he said.
Electric-assisted pedal cycles, or e-bikes, are legal, providing they can’t travel faster than 15.5mph.
Inspector Thompson added: “We have received reports of e-scooters and e-bikes being ridden inconsiderately and even dangerously and we are determined to tackle their irresponsible and illegal use.
“They are often ridden on pavements and this increases the likelihood of collision with a pedestrian, which could result in serious injury or worse.
“On the roads, e-bikes must satisfy the legal criteria to be used on a highway and that includes the rider being insured.”
