A TEENAGE girl was left critically injured following an incident involving a “small articulated loading vehicle” in Chalkwell park.
The incident occurred after teenagers took “unauthorised control” of the vehicle at around 12.30 am on Saturday, June 13.
This resulted in “significant injuries” to the teenage girl.
Officers and crew arrived at the scene, and paramedics took the girl to hospital, where (at the time of writing) she remains in a critical condition.
Her family has been informed and are being supported.
Residents reported seeing a large police presence in Chalkwell Park throughout Saturday including forensics on the scene, and a cordon in place.
A small green agricultural loading vehicle also appeared to be cordoned off by police.
An 18-year-old man from Westcliff and a 17-year-old boy from Leigh have been arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving.
Both are on bail while enquiries continue.
The serious incident has prompted statements from many public figures.
Southend Council leader Daniel Cowan and MP for Leigh and Southend West David Burton- Sampson said they were being kept informed of the development by Essex police.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: “For now, my thoughts are with the young girl who has been injured and I wish her a good recovery.”
Mr Cowan said: “My thoughts are with the young girl who has been critically injured, and with her family and loved ones at what must be an incredibly difficult time.
“I wish her a full and speedy recovery.
“I’m being kept updated on developments and would like to thank the emergency services for their response.”
Essex Police are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are appealing for public information about what happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.
A spokesperson for Essex police said: “We know there were a large number of young people in the area at the time, and we believe some may have witnessed what happened.
“We urgently need to hear from anyone with information or footage.
