THE Green Party in Southend has expressed its disappointment at news that the swimming pool at North Street School is due to close in July.
The party is supporting residents who have launched a petition calling on Southend City Council to step in and protect what they describe as a vital community asset.
Coun Richard Longstaff said: “Having had three children there myself, and one still regularly using the pool, it will be sadly missed by children, parents and instructors alike.
“It was much loved and much used, including at weekends and for mother and baby groups – I have fond memories attending regularly with my children over the years.
“The swimming pool has relied heavily on fundraising by the PTA to remain open, and it is becoming increasingly difficult to expect parents to contribute even more during the cost-of-living crisis.
“We should be doing everything we can to protect leisure facilities for our children. This pool provides an invaluable resource for local families and helps young people develop essential water safety and swimming skills.”
The Greens are speaking with the council’s Portfolio Holder and will be raising the issue with Southend West and Leigh MP David Burton-Sampson, urging them to find a solution that will keep the facility open.
Residents can support the campaign by signing the petition, ‘Save North Street School Swimming Pool’, on Southend City Council’s petition website, which calls on the council to provide funding to secure the future of the pool.
