Society’s Summer Show

THE Leigh Horticultural Society Summer Show packed out Leigh Road Baptist Church.
The room was filled with people, blooms, scents, and a complete range of home produce to enchant all the senses. The constant stream of visitors delighted in every exhibit after some testing decisions made earlier in the day by the judges.
The winners in the main categories were:
Terry Birdseye Stacey Cup – best specimen rose: Rose Society UK Bronze Medal
Lucia Curthoys The Channon Cup – most points in the rose classes
Lesley Sammon The Southend Times Cup – most points in the cut flower classes.
Linda Kemp The Pam Dillon Trophy – sweet peas
Sue Butcher Certificate of Merit for Floral Art – depiction of “barbecue time”
Maureen Moss Certificate for Best Exhibit in the Arts and Crafts Section – beautiful child’s dress
Giles Markwell President’s Award – Aeonium
The children excelled again:
Charlotte Livemore Best Exhibit – Vegetable and Fruit Tortoise
Nellie Woodward Most Points
Plus, there was an award for ‘best fragranced rose’, voted for by visitors on the day. This year it was won by Lyn Mason, her rose was elected by guests, as the best perfumed.
The Leigh Horticultural Society runs four similar events a year. There are categories for everybody, including keen gardeners and florists, home bakers and artists.
