PLANS for new medical facilities in Southend have moved a step forward after a meeting between the city’s MPs and the Health Minister.
David Burton-Sampson and Bayo Alaba spoke with Karin Smyth in parliament to discuss support for the proposals, which are backed by the Essex Integrated Care Board (ICB).
The Health Minister said she is interested in the plans and is happy to explore all the options alongside the ICB.
The ICB threw its weight behind the bid for new and improved health facilities for Southend in the spring when its leader, Tom Abell, welcomed the initiative.
The plans were launched at the start of the year by the MPs and the Council Leader as part of “Opportunity Southend’s” proposals for improved hospital provision in the city.
Mr Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, said:” I am delighted to see that the Health Minister was so positive and will work with us to deliver for the people of Southend.
“Everywhere we have made our case for improved medical facilities here, we have received significant support.”
Mr Alba said:” As our area continues to grow and thrive, it is vitally important that we plan properly for the future.”
‘Opportunity Southend’ makes the case that Southend University Hospital is no longer fit for purpose. Parts of the building date back to 1932 and have reached the end of their useful life.
The ICB has recognised that a solution needs to be found to improve the quality of NHS estate in Southend, given the scale of planned development in and around the city.
Mr Alaba added: “By having new facilities across the city, we can ensure that residents receive timely, high-quality healthcare closer to home, reducing pressure on existing services and improving outcomes for everyone.”
Mr Burton-Sampson added:” We want to work with all stakeholders to find a positive way forward to bolster the quality of health provision in the city.
“Now we are working with the government too, to bring these plans to fruition and ensure the best possible healthcare for future generations.”
