Care Leavers Campaign

FORMER Olympian, Fatima Whitbread, joined David Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, in parliament to promote her campaign to support care leavers.
The MP said he was proud to host the sporting legend and support her cause to give care leavers a better life.
The javelin world champion grew up in care. She understands how a nurturing environment can help children and young people.
Ms Whitbread founded the campaign because she believes that there is still significant progress to be made in giving care leavers more support.
The athlete, who won two Olympic Medals, told David Burton-Sampson that she wants to fix the care system. He said: “I was delighted to host this event for Fatima. Her achievements are an example to us all. What a role model!”
Ms Whitbread’s UK Campaign is a charitable initiative dedicated to giving care-experienced young people a voice and practical opportunities to thrive.
The athlete met with MPs to make the case for supporting and protecting young people and providing them with practical and emotional support.
In her efforts to raise awareness and bring lasting improvements to care leavers’ lives, Ms Whitbread is trying to develop a charter for care leavers in conjunction with local authorities.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: “It was great to see Southend council, who have an excellent record on delivery, in parliament, engaging with Fatima’s cause.
“She understands how a nurturing and supportive environment can help children and young people make more of their lives, and she is a shining example.”
