20th Poetry Collection

POETS from Southend have launched their 20th collection, Southend Poetry 20.

The new collection demonstrates the range of talent in the group. Since the first collection was produced in 1985, when Essex Countryside magazine reviewed the pamphlet under the caption “Southend’s Bright Spirits,” the group has published a collection each year containing work by writers active in the area.

This latest collection includes poems by 23 writers, including Katie Mallett, who will be well known to local newspaper readers and radio listeners, Mervyn Linford and Derek Adams, all of whom have been published in national magazines and newspapers.

The group has now published over 800 poems by more than 80 writers, a remarkable record of consistency for a local poetry group.

The annual collections provides the group’s writers with a platform in print, and readers with a view of the breadth of talent in the area.

The group, which meets at 8.00pm on the first Wednesday of each month upstairs in the Railway Hotel, Clifftown Road, welcomes anyone who has an interest in poetry to come along to one of their meetings. The next meeting on Wednesday 4th August is a readaround where everyone is invited to bring along and read his or her own poetry.
