Beecroft Exhibition

THREE Southend-based artists are showcasing a range of work in a new exhibition currently open in the city.
‘BETWEEN:US’ brings together the work of Peter Haugh, Jonathan Rust and Victoria Sills at the Beecroft Art Gallery.
The show’s title foregrounds the ethos of the exhibition, proposing a space of relation between works rather than a unifying theme, with meaning emergent in the space between the pieces.
All fine art graduates, Peter, Jonathan and Victoria are also recent alumni of the local postgraduate art course TOMA (The Other MA), an artist-led education programme.
Peter explores themes of isolation and ageing, working with wood, inks and other media to make prints, sculpture and small installations.
Jonathan works digitally, using processes to builds images incrementally through looking, adjusting, layering, erasing and returning.
Victoria works primarily with paint, and will be showcasing The Scold’s Bridle series, in modern portraiture that uses the arcane punishment device as a metaphor for contemporary disciplinary structures.
The three practices all share a concern for how meaning is formed, and invite visitors to take part in this ongoing process through encountering the work.
A spokesperson for the artists explain: “Meaning doesn’t arrive fully formed. It emerges in the space between what is seen, what is sensed, and what is allowed to unfold.”
The exhibition is running until November 29th at the Beecroft Art Gallery, in Victoria Avenue, open every Wednesday to Sunday, 11 am to 5 pm.
