Belfairs Centenary Golfers

GOLFERS from across the Southend area joined forces to celebrate the centenary of Belfairs Park and Golf Course.
The event marked 100 years since Mayor Alderman Herbert Arthur Dowsett J.P. officially opened Belfairs Park Golf Course in September 1926, making it the first municipal golf course in Essex.
Councillor Stephen Aylen, of Belfairs Ward, led the annual tournament celebrations by teeing off with the same type of 1926 flat-iron club used by Mayor Alderman Dowsett to open the course.
Coun Aylen also used a 1934 Dunlop 65 golf ball, named after a famous round by Henry Cotton who played regularly during the Second World War at Belfairs.
A keen sportsman and dedicated citizen, Mr Cotton regularly raised money for the war effort during this period.
The centenary celebrations this September included the driving of a ceremonial first ball, and the planting of a 100-year rose as well as a large tournament involving over 100 golfers.
Teams from Rochford 100 Golf Club, Boyce Hill Golf Club, Thorpe Bay Golf Club, Belfairs Golf Club and Southend Golf Club gathered for the matches, marking a century of community recreation in the heart of Leigh.
