Conservative Candidate Announced

VOTERS in West Leigh will have an opportunity to elect local GP, prospective Conservative Party candidate, Dr Alex Shaw at the Southend City Council elections on 7th May 2026.
Dr Shaw is a local resident in West Leigh, living with his young family near Highlands Boulevard and a senior partner at Highlands Surgery which last year celebrated an upgraded CQC rating for delivering an ‘outstanding’ service to residents across Leigh.
Coun Fay Evans, will be standing down in May following 25 years of service on Southend City Council representing residents in Belfairs and West Leigh. Coun Evans was first elected in 2001 and has built a strong reputation within the Leigh community.
Dr Shaw, said: “I am delighted to be the Conservative Candidate for my home, West Leigh, heading into the local elections in May.
“Thank you to Cou Evans for her dedicated and long-standing service to our community she will certainly be a tough act to follow, but I will do my best to stand-up for our neighbours in Leigh-on-Sea just as vociferously as she has.
“Over the next few months, I look forward to meeting many more West Leigh residents and championing their concerns. It is so important we have proactive advocates for our community, delivering on the basics and improving local services.
“I’m not afraid to put in the hard work to keep our area a great place to live and to work for local families and hopefully friends and neighbours will lend me their vote on 7th May.”

Coun Evans said: “Serving the residents has been an honour over the last 25 years and I know that Dr Shaw will do a fantastic job for West Leigh.
“He is known for being a hard working GP who always puts patients first, and I know he will do just as well representing our area.
“Most importantly, Dr Shaw will be a great addition to the West Leigh team and work closely with Coun Lesley Salter and Coun Owen Cartey to secure the improvements to our area that are most needed.
“I will be standing right beside him all the way to Polling Day.”
Coun Cartey said: “Dr Shaw is just the kind of experienced voice we need on Southend City Council and I would be proud for him to join our Conservative Team in West Leigh.
“Residents will have a very clear choice on 7th May, a strong local Conservative candidate that would kick out the Labour-Liberal Democrat coalition running our Council into the ground, or the risk of an unknown by voting for one of the other parties.”
