SCHOOL pupils in Leigh have taken action to tackle road safety issues outside their school.
Children at West Leigh Junior School launched a new Parking Patrol initiative led by members of the school council.
The idea was developed following discussions in council meetings and a visit to the Houses of Parliament, where the children spoke with their local MP.
Concerned about dangerous parking near the school, particularly vehicles stopping on yellow lines or blocking driveways, the children were motivated to act.
Armed with informative and politely-worded leaflets, the Parking Patrol team have been reminding drivers to park considerately.
The leaflets highlight how parking dangerously can make it difficult for children and pedestrians to see clearly when crossing the road, increasing the risk of accidents.
The innovative project has already received a positive response, with many parents and local residents praising the children for their efforts.
A spokesperson for the school said: “The children would like to thank those who have taken notice of the campaign, including families who are now setting off earlier to walk part of the journey or choosing safer places to park.
“Their support, staff say, not only helps keep the area safe but also shows the pupils that their voices are being heard.”
