Safety Measures Call

WEST Leigh ward Green Party candidate, Simon Gittus, is calling for urgent safety improvements around Belfairs Academy following a series of accidents, including a fatality in 2023 where a 74 year old woman was hit in Highlands Boulevard.
Mr Gittus will raise the issue at the next Full Council meeting to seek assurance that action will be taken, after residents highlighted their concerns while he was chatting to them on the doorstep over the past months.
“One accident is too many,” Mr Gittus said. “We’ve seen multiple collisions in recent years, plus countless near-misses that go unreported.
“Cars are double-parked, parked in restricted zones, overtaking dangerously, and speeding through the area. It’s only a matter of time before tragedy strikes again. We need to redesign this space to keep children and adults safe – whether they’re walking, cycling, or just getting off the bus.”
The Greens say they are pushing for a long-term, sustainable solution and support the Vision Zero initiative, which aims to eliminate all road deaths.
