HEARTFELT tributes have been paid to a Rochford District Councillor described as “kindness itself”, who has passed away at the age of 83.
Myra Weir BEM, a former Chairman of Rochford Parish Council, was also its longest running member.
As a dedicated public servant in south Essex, Coun Weir was widely celebrated for her three-decade career championing the local community through volunteer work and community endeavours.
Serving as a member of Rochford and Hawkwell Parish Councils from 1991, she was also notably chaired the Planning Committee for over 20 years and was a former Chairman of the Council.
A key project of Coun Weir’s was the Rochford Day Centre, to which she dedicated over 30 years, taking charge of its day-to-day operations and personally cooking midday meals for seniors in the area.
As someone with an unwavering commitment to the older and vulnerable members of the community, she was also the driving force behind the ‘Christmas Parcels for the Elderly’ scheme and was a familiar, presence seen undertaking regular local litter picks.
A spokesperson for Rochford District Council sad: “Her commitment to supporting residents and improving community life touched countless people over the years.”
In recognition of her outstanding service to the Rochford Day Centre and the local community, Coun Weir was awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM), a for her dedication and selfless public service.
The council spokesperson continued: “Myra will be remembered with great affection and gratitude for her kindness, hard work, and unwavering commitment to others. She will be greatly missed by members, officers, and the wider community.
“Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with Myra’s family and friends at this difficult time.”
