SOUTHEND City Council has announced the eagerly awaited return of their annual Christmas switch-on event.

Set for November 18, starting at noon, Southend High Street will burst into life with a day-long festive spectacle, featuring an array of performances, special guests, and holiday activities.

Centre stage will showcase an eclectic mix of local talent, including flamenco dancers, a lively Ceilidh band, and the debut performance by The Ironworks Youth Theatre.

The vibrant sounds of Caribbean steel drums will further enhance the festivities, ensuring an unforgettable experience.

The day will culminate in a festive sing-along, complete with lyrics displayed on a large screen, leading up to the grand Christmas lights switch-on.

The evening’s climax will be a breathtaking display of seafront fireworks, ushering in the iconic winter celebrations of Southend.

Adding to the enchantment, children can embark on the captivating Christmas trail, “Spread the Cheer, and Leave as a Reindeer,” where they will transform into reindeer by visiting designated stations in BID Zone businesses.

The trail concludes with a magical encounter with Father Christmas, ensuring lasting memories.

Meanwhile, the artisan craft market, nestled near the railway bridge on the High Street, will feature a multitude of local creatives showcasing their unique wares. Live music and walkabout entertainment will further animate the High Street, creating a vibrant atmosphere for festive shoppers.

Beyond the switch-on event, the artisan Christmas market will continue every Sunday until Christmas, offering an extended opportunity for the community to discover locally-made treasures.

Those interested in participating in this year’s festivities, whether through trading at the markets, performing, or volunteering on the day, are encouraged to contact [email protected] for further information. Community groups, choirs, performing arts groups, and schools are particularly welcomed to get involved.

Suzanne Gloyne, Manager of Southend City BID, expressed her enthusiasm for the event: “Southend is renowned for its extraordinary Christmas events, and we take immense pleasure in creating enduring memories during this festive season.

“We are overjoyed to present this incredible day-long switch-on event, filled with uplifting performances and fantastic entertainment. We anticipate this will be a day cherished by both locals and visitors, as we come together to celebrate our beautifully decorated city for Christmas.”
