A LEIGH man broke the world record for running the London Marathon in an inflatable costume.

Regular runner Lee Baynton has run the iconic 26.2-mile five times before, but decided this year to harness some Jurassic energy by running the course dressed as a dinosaur, all the while raising money for local hospice care.

Despite the added weight and restrictions of the costume, Mr Baynton came in before tens of thousands of other runners as he crossed the line in three hours, 21 minutes and seven seconds, beating the previous record of four hours and 15 minutes.

After finishing the marathon, on Sunday April 21, he was presented with an official Guinness World Record certificate.

He said: “It was an amazing experience to be able to break the world record for running a marathon dressed in an inflatable costume.

“I have run many marathons over the past few years, but must admit this was probably the most enjoyable and memorable experience.

“The crowds were incredible, cheering and supporting me the whole way around the streets of London.

“The media coverage has been fantastic and this achievement has been posted all over social media.”

Mr Baynton, 39, was raising money for the Little Havens Hospice.

He added: “They are a local charity to me and do a lot of great work for children and young people. They are a great asset to the community.

“From this exposure, I want to raise awareness and hopefully some funds for them.

They do a lot of great work for children and young people and I would appreciate any money you can donate.”
