A LEIGH resident has made a large donation to contribute exciting new books to a local school.
Mr Tony Betts donated £960 to purchase children’s dictionaries for Darlinghurst Academy on Pavilion Drive.
The donation was made via the online business Little Leighs Bookshop, owned by local resident and former-early years teacher Rebecca Kent.
Ms Kent started the business, which supplies inspirational and educational books for all youngsters, to inspire a love of reading in children.
She was delighted when Mr Betts approached her to donate the books to Darlinghurst Academy, where his son is a pupil.
She explained: “I had been supporting the school with a sponsored read and book fair to help fill their library –meaning they have £1300 of free books heading their way!
“Tony got in contact with myself following discussions with the school.
“Tony knew how tight school budgets are, and wanted to support the school by purchasing 85 dictionaries and thesauruses for children to use across the school.”
Mr Bett’s donation is the biggest Ms Kent has received, and as her bookshop is linked to Usborne publisher’s ‘free books for schools’ offer, she was also to top up his donated amount.
Now, pupils at Darlinghurst Academy will be able to enjoy the donations, which comprise a mix of age-appropriate picture books for KS1, illustrated books for KS2, alongside 35 illustrated thesauruses.
