This Autumn he returns to the Palace Theatre with his captivating new tour, Unnatural Causes – Time of Death, which invites audiences into the world of forensic investigation.

With over 23,000 autopsies to his name, Dr. Shepherd’s career has seen him investigate some of the world’s most high-profile cases, from the Hungerford Massacre to the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

Dr Shepherd explains why talking about death is important: “We no longer openly talk about “death,” we talk euphemistically about ‘passing on.’

“The experience of death is now diminished so that when it does happen there have not been any rehearsals for what it is going to be like, and they struggle to understand their emotions which all make death much harder to cope with.”

Time is crucial theme to the new show: “When I retired as a Home Office pathologist, I took up a long held interest in learning how to mend clocks and as someone pointed out, I’d spent my whole career taking things apart and not being able to put them back together, and that mending clocks meant I was taking complex things apart in the hope that I could put them back together and get them to work again,” he said.

“It made me think again about how time is so important in terms of forensic medicine. When did the crime happen? How old is that injury? How long did someone survive? All crucial questions.”

Unnatural Causes – Time of Death offers an insightful look into this vital role time plays in solving mysteries of life and death.

This is not just a lecture on forensic science, but a deeply personal account of how a career spent in the darkest corners of humanity has shaped Dr. Shepherd’s view on life.
