Choir Highlights Leigh

A LOCAL award-winning choir are highlighting the maritime and cultural history of Leigh with a new national project.
Southend Vox Chamber Choir are one of four music groups chosen to participate in the national Making Music ‘Adopt A Creator’ project 2025, for which they have been twinned with Aran O’Grady, an award-winning Irish composer.
The collaboration has resulted in a 15-minute composition, ‘Between Sea & Sky: Tales of the Estuary’, including a poem by Southend Poetry Group founder, the late Dorothy Gibson, called ‘Fishing Boats at Leigh-on-Sea’.
Nina Bemister, a previous Chamber member and friend of the choir, has also written lyrics for the composition telling the legend of local sea-witch Sarah Moore.
The piece is rounded off with a contribution by Sadie Hasler, local playwright, actor and columnist, focusing on repositioning the infamous reputation of Essex Girls.
Musical Director of Vox Chamber Choir, Jo Human, said: “When I found out that we had been chosen to be part of this project this time last year, I was so excited. It has been an honour to work with Aran over the course of this year and we’ve had great fun along the way, learning a lot about the creative process of composing.
“It is also wonderful for chamber to have been able to input into this piece, and the end product is a true representation of both us and the local area that we care deeply for; I can’t wait for us to perform it for the first time!”
A special performance of the piece will be given at 5pm on Saturday 22nd November
