A NEW home-education initiative has launched in Leigh, offering a space for local children to explore their creativity, and develop a lifelong love of learning.
Three passionate educators have come together to create Bloom Community Leigh at The Quaker Hall in Dundonald Drive: a hub designed to support home-educated learners, where children can connect with others face to face through creative, social, and academic activities.
The trio, all of whom have experience teaching children with SEN and children who have experienced trauma, formed Bloom as a response to their own experiences.
Julie Archer explained: “Over the years, we’ve seen first-hand that traditional school settings don’t meet the needs of every child. That understanding inspired us to create an inclusive and supportive space for home-educated learners.”
On Saturday November 1, Bloom held a well-attended open day at the Quaker Hall: “We were thrilled by the turnout at our open day,” said Julie.
“It was lovely to meet so many families in person. We had a relaxed, friendly atmosphere with activities for the children and lots of interest from parents who were keen to find a local, community-based space for their children to connect and learn together.”
It is estimated that there are over 600 home-educated children in the wider Leigh and Southend area, with numbers growing steadily.
Ms Archer continued: “the open day really highlighted how many families in the area are looking for more opportunities for their home-educated children to build friendships, develop skills, and feel part of a supportive community.”
Bloom Community Leigh, for children aged 7–17, runs on Tuesday mornings, and officially started on November 11th.
They cover maths, English, social skills, and creative activities, offering a flexible and nurturing alternative to traditional schooling, whilst providing guidance to do appropriate exams if children wish.
It is important for the sessions to be engaging: “hands-on experiences, and a personalised approach, help every child grow in confidence and curiosity—both academically and socially,” the team added.
Parents and children who attended the open day responded positively to the child-led sessions, and praised both the “cosy and welcoming” learning area and the “lovely spacious outdoor area.”
Tangible amongst the parents was a sense of anticipation for the new offering: “I’m so excited about this — I’ve got goosebumps!” commented one parent.
“It’s education in a safe space,” added another.
