A LEIGH teenager is sharing his inspiring story of resilience and empathy after starting his own estate agency aged just 19.
Rio Holder, founder of Enbrook Estate Agents, was only 12 when his mother became seriously ill with sepsis and necrotising fasciitis.
Although she survived, the illness left her disabled, and from that moment Mr Holder learned to balance school, work, and caring responsibilities.
He explained: “Against all odds, she survived multiple high-risk operations.
“When she came out of the coma, the fight wasn’t over — she had to relearn how to walk and rebuild her strength from nothing. Doctors told us her recovery would take a year, but she was home in just over four months because she pushed herself harder than anyone expected, to come home to me.”
When his mother returned, life remained difficult. Mr Holder became his mum’s carer, doing the shopping, walking their dog, and supporting her while she was unable to manage the stairs in their flat for months: “It was hard, but having her home meant everything to me, ” Mr Holder said.
He says the experience taught him discipline and time management at a young age.
“More than anything, it gave me perspective. I learned not to take stability, health, or opportunity for granted, and that mindset has stayed with me.”
Mr Holder’s entry into the property industry was challenging, but those early experiences shaped his values and the founding of Enbrook Estate Agents, which opened on January 13th this year.
He added: “I realised that if I was going to do this, it needed to be fairer, more transparent, and more human.”
Alongside introducing innovations such as partnerships with a local finance company and a building firm, Mr Holder is focused on improving the conveyancing process.
His determination was also inspired by his mother’s strength; she later graduated in Therapeutic Counselling in 2021.
“Watching her keep going showed me what real strength looks like,” he said.
“Everything I’ve learned about resilience comes from her.”
Based in Rectory Grove, Mr Holder says he places the Leigh community at the heart of his work. “Leigh has a strong sense of pride and support for local people, and that’s something I want to reflect in everything I do.
“I try to recognise that everyone has something going on behind the scenes. Creating an environment where people feel supported rather than pressured really matters to me.”
