MP Visits Ukraine

DAVID Burton-Sampson returned to Ukraine for the chilling fourth anniversary of the start of its war with Russia.
He visited Kiev and attended the ceremony in Independence Square.
The MP for Southend West and Leigh said: “I am here in the centre of Kyiv, in Independence Square, for this the fourth-year anniversary remembrance ceremony since the start of the illegal invasion by Putin and the Russians.
“I can’t believe that I am here again for the second year in a row.”
In February 2022 Putin’s Russia invaded Ukraine, but failed to take control of Ukraine’s capital and European Solidarity has helped Volodymyr Zelensky to stand firm over the past four years.
Both the Ukrainian president and the UK’s Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, attended the service, which Mr Burton-Sampson and other members of parliament’s Ukraine group also participated in.
“Going back to Ukraine a year after going the first time, to see how the proud people of Ukraine are bearing up and discuss developments is a salutary reminder of their endurance and resilience.”
The MP said that it was devastating to see bombed out buildings and people in tents, which is the reality of living in a country that is constantly under attack.
Travelling by night train from Poland to Ukraine, he had meetings with the office of the president about the illegal invasion of the country.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: “Let’s hope this is the last year we are here remembering the start of the war and that moving forward we are here remembering the end of the war.
“We continue to stand resolute alongside the Ukrainians and will do until this war is over.”
