A SOUTH Essex MP has congratulated a local charity on successfully raising £1 million towards the upkeep of a church, in his constituency.
Rayleigh & Wickford MP, Mark Francois, praised the Friends of Holy Trinity on this remarkable achievement, when he attended their 2026 AGM.
The Friends were formed 29 years ago, to help raise funds for the upkeep and maintenance of Rayleigh’s part-fourteenth century parish church, which sits at the top of the High Street. Since their inception, the group has run multiple fundraising events, from the annual Rayleigh Garden Trail, through quiz nights and concerts and even a ‘teddy bears’ parachute jump’ to generate funds for the church.
Mr Francois also handed out ‘long-service’ certificates to retiring Secretary Joyce Giles, who has served the Friends for 18 years; retiring Treasurer Derek Kentish, who has served for sixteen years, plus a special certificate for Friends Chairman, Jane Brown, for working, with her team, to achieve the notable £1 million milestone.
Speaking about their achievement, Mr Francois, who is also the President of the Friends, said: “I am very proud of the Friends of Holy Trinity, who, through persistent fundraising efforts, spanning almost three decades, have now passed the one-million-pound mark.
“This is an incredible achievement and all those involved, including those I presented certificates to, in recognition of their service to the Group and the wider community in Rayleigh, deserve to be warmly congratulated.
“Here’s to the next million!”
