Leigh On Sea News: Car Paint Trend – A CAR EXPERT from Rayleigh is making an impact in one of the most male-dominated industries in the UK, inspiring others to do the same by amassing a huge social media following.
Lisa Liegeois from Rayleigh, has garnered 165,000 followers on TikTok and Instagram by making videos demonstrating her skills in the automotive paint industry.
Working from her shop in Wickford, she uses the videos to explain common repair myths: “My videos educate drivers on how paint actually works, exposing common repair myths, and helping people avoid unnecessary bodyshop costs.”
With her account videos regularly reaching between 25,000 and 200,000 views, she is now fully recognised online in an industry where female specialists are still rarely seen.
At age 28, her passion started six years ago, when she was accepted to do an apprenticeship.
“I’d always loved cars and was in the car scene, trying to modify my wheels,” she explained.
“Very quickly I realised how technical and misunderstood paintwork actually is! It’s not just “spraying a car,” it’s precision, preparation, and understanding materials. That challenge is what pulled me in,” she added.
Ms Liegeois is now making connections nationally, building audiences and helping endorse the diversity of the automobile industry: “When I started my apprenticeship, I became aware early on that it’s a very male-dominated environment, which pushed me even more to prove that skill in this trade has nothing to do with gender,” she said.
Currently in the UK, women make up around 20% or less of the overall automotive workforce, but this drops to about 9–10% in mechanical roles and falls even further to just around 2% among automotive apprentices.
Ms Liegeois said she is overjoyed that her social media base has allowed her to find new friends and colleagues, as well as make her mark on a sector where women are still underrepresented.
“I wanted to show women they can enter the trade,” said Ms Liegeois.
“There are quite a few of us now and I want to help show other women they can do it if they want to.”
After a BBC Essex appearance on March 13, Ms Liegeois is keen to continue sharing her passion: “My goal is to educate more people and make car paint and repair knowledge accessible to everyone.”
Ms Liegeois is launching a new online polishing course, which teaches everything about polishing and removing scratches and swirls on cars, and is suitable from complete beginner to pro level.
Long term, she hopes to build the brand to include more courses and in-person training, while also encouraging more women to enter her trade.
