Youth Day

MORE than 70 students joined MP David Burton-Sampson for his Youth Day get together.
Pupils from Chase High School, the Eastwood Academy, Cecil Jones Academy, St Thomas More High School, The St Christopher School, Westcliff High School for Boys and members Southend’s Youth Council were welcomed by the MP for Southend West & Leigh.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: “It was a fantastic morning and great to see so many young people interested in politics and giving their views”
The team from Southend United Community Foundation also attended and helped judge the “Dragon’s Den” style presentations from the students, along with some of the members of the Youth Council.
They heard presentations on “Improved Amenities for the Young People of Southend”, “Supporting Small Businesses through engaging Young People” and “Mental Health and Well-Being for Residents of Southend”.
It was Eastwood Academy’s “Support for Neurodivergent Pupils” that took the title and they were delighted to win the day on a public vote cast by everyone in the room.
Mr Burton-Sampson said:” I cannot believe the quality of the presentations.
“All of them were so well thought out and delivered. It’s really heartening to see the standard of debate among young people and how articulate they are.”
Alex Clark, Head of at Coaching at Southend United Community Foundation and Andy Edmunds, its Head of Education, gave inspiring talks, not only about sport, but tackling the challenges of life with mental resilience.
The pupils also grilled Mr Burton-Sampson over his path to becoming an MP and how best to deal with the forthcoming legislation on social media.
Mr Burton-Sampson said:” This was a great event and it was so good to hear so many views from young people. It is important to listen to the opinions of the younger generation because they are the decision makers of the future and if these young people are anything to go by, we are in safe hands.”
