A WESTCLIFF charity shop is set to close after two decades, in what had been described as a “tragedy” for members of the community.
The Trinity Family Centre shop, on West Road, will close on June 30, but stops operating from June 26 while the premises conducts a clear out.
The charity shop both served the local community with clothing and household items, as well as offering employment to volunteers, from those seeking work, to people with disabilities benefitting from the social engagement the shop afforded.
Managers at the shop described how the decision to close was a difficult one, but was motivated by a lack of footfall, and fewer people coming to volunteer.
Director of Trinity Family Centre, Viv Robson, said: “It is the end of an era and a tragedy for the community.
“We were never trying to make a profit with the shop.”
She added that with rising costs, it was impossible to subsidise the premises.
“This shop is based in one of the most deprived areas of the country and many people are not able to afford the prices that other charity shops put on their labels.”
Trinity Family Centre will continue to offer services at their premises on Argyll Road, which includes pensioner groups, chatter and natter community cafe, parent and toddler groups, and a community fridge initiative.
