Backing Andy Burnham

DAVID Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh, is backing Andy Burnham, as the former Mayor of Manchester and Prime Minister in waiting made his first policy speech since becoming MP for Makerfield.
Devolution and “our place” were at the core of the speech which singled out support for coastal areas like Southend. There was backing for the training of young people, for changing high streets into symbols of a new renaissance and support for investment in the east.
Mr Burton-Sampson said: “All of these issues are very close to my heart and that is why I am backing Andy Burnham to be our leader and next Prime Minister.
“He shares my desire to see greater investment in the future of young people, ensuring all have the opportunity to be successful in life whatever their skill set. He gets that having a good home is the foundation for families to build from and I am excited to hear about his plans for the biggest council housing building programme in a generation.
“His plans to reform business rates for pubs and the high street are much needed and many of my local businesses have been crying out for this for years.”
Mr Burton-Sampson campaigned for Mr Burnham in the recent Makerfield by-election and was impressed with what he saw. The MP for Southend West and Leigh believes that Southend need not worry about funding not coming here and flowing elsewhere.
“His plan for change includes the greatest rebalancing of power away from Westminster to local regions, driving greater local control of utilities and services, focusing on reindustrialisation and local regeneration.
“I believe that Andy is best placed to take over as Leader of the Labour Party and to serve as our next Prime Minister. He therefore, has my full backing and support.”
