Drink Driving Operation

OFFICERS from Essex Police’s Road Safety Team have carried out a proactive day of enforcement activity in Castle Point and Rochford.
A police statement said: “On Saturday 20 June, officers carried out Operation Limit as part of the force’s ongoing commitment to reducing harm on the roads. While the operation primarily targeted drink and drug driving, it also highlighted how roads policing sits at the heart of tackling wider criminality. The intelligence-led deployment disrupts offenders and improves safety through visible, proactive policing activity.
“During the operation, 18 people were arrested, with 15 linked to drink or drug driving offences. Roadside tests indicated the presence of cannabis and cocaine.
“However, officers also dealt with a wider range of offences, underlining how those using the road network for criminal purposes can be identified and stopped.
“A disqualified driver was arrested after abandoning his car in Canvey and attempting to flee. Thanks to information from members of the public, he was quickly located and arrested on suspicion of failing to stop for police, careless driving and driving whilst disqualified.
“In a separate incident, another driver who failed to stop for officers was located with support from the public after travelling at 42mph in a 30mph zone. His vehicle was seized.
“Both drivers failed roadside drug tests.
“Officers also made an arrest of a man wanted in connection with a domestic assault during the operation, further demonstrating the broad impact of roads policing.”
Results from the day included: 114 Traffic Offence Reports issued for a variety of traffic offences – 230 speeding offences detected, including 210 incidents in 30mph zones – 7 vehicles seized.
The police statement continued: “Essex Police’s roads policing teams are in a unique position to spot and disrupt criminal activity, using the road network as an opportunity to identify offenders, gather intelligence and take enforcement action and playing a vital role in reducing harm and protecting communities.
“The operation highlights the vital role roads policing plays in identifying offenders, gathering intelligence and disrupting criminal activity, as well as removing dangerous drivers from the road. Through targeted enforcement and public support, Essex Police continues to reduce harm and protect communities.
“Anyone with information about dangerous driving or criminal activity on Essex’s roads is urged to report it to police, helping officers to take action and keep communities safe.”
