PET owners will benefit from the first overhaul of the veterinary sector in sixty years thanks to Labour’s veterinary reforms, says David Burton-Sampson, MP for Southend West & Leigh.
Vets will have to publish price lists for common treatments in the future and there will be transparency about options and changes.
Mr Burton-Sampson said:” This will allow pet owners to choose the best treatment for their animals.
“As a dog owner myself, I know how expensive vets’ bills can be. These reforms will help households understand what they are paying for, avoid unexpected costs and choose the best value care for their animals.”
Vet fees have risen at nearly twice the rate of inflation according to the latest figures, which is why this government is acting, he said.
The MP added:” I am delighted that the government is taking these steps. These changes will make the system clearer, fairer and more transparent for pet owners.
“And this move also supports the profession. It adds oversight of veterinary businesses as well as individual vets, updates the governance model and gives legal recognition for veterinary nurses.
“We know costs are a real concern for pet owners. We found that more than half of them are worried about how to afford vet bills. This is an important step forward.”
