THE introduction of a two-pound cap on bus fares has been welcomed by MP David Burton-Sampson.
The government has announced that from next year fares will be pegged at the two-pound limit.
The MP for Southend West and Leigh said: “Bus travel is absolutely vital to so many people, particularly to young people who need to get around for their education, training and work as well as leisure.
“The introduction of the two-pound bus fare cap for my constituents in Southend West and Leigh from next year, is really good news. It is a positive move forward.
“It comes on top of the Great British Summer of Savings, where we’ve seen young people have free bus travel through the month of August and obviously, the new bus services that we have implemented across south Essex using government money.”
People will save a third on bus travel after the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham announced the cap, he said, to help with the cost of living, to boost local economies and to open up opportunities.
Mr Burton-Sampson added: “As well as helping people get around the city, this will mean people can get to our resort more easily. This is a hugely positive move that is going to help give people a breathing space.”
