Windmill’s 20th Anniversary

MARK Francois has thanked the volunteers who have helped make Rayleigh Windmill accessible to the general public, at the 20th anniversary of its reopening.
Rayleigh and Wickford MP, Mr Francois, presented a specially commissioned painting of the iconic local landmark to Trevor Rand, the volunteer co-ordinator and his team, at a weekend event to mark the 20th anniversary of the Mill being reopened, to the public.
Mr Francois helped obtain a grant of some £350,000 from the Thames Gateway Partnership, over two decades ago, which financed the complete refurbishment of the old mill, to allow it to be visited safely by the public. Mr Francois was supported in presenting the award to Trevor by Coun Simon Wootton, Chairman of Rochford District Council and Cllr Elizabeth Brewer, Chairman of Rayleigh Town Council.
Speaking about the happy event, Mr Francois said: “When we applied for the grant, over two decades ago now, it was partly contingent on having a team of willing volunteers, to give up their time to help people visit the Mill.
“Thankfully, Trevor and his colleagues stepped forward and they have been conducting successful tours and presentations ever since. I want to thank Trevor and all of his team for their selfless work and wish the iconic Rayleigh Windmill another successful twenty years as a wonderful heritage landmark for Rayleigh and the surrounding Rochford District.”
