Pool Petition Presented

A PETITION to save North Street Swimming Pool was presented to Southend City Council’s Full Council on 16 July by Leigh Green Councillor Stuart Allen.
Launched by local parents, the petition attracted 2,621 signatures, making it one of the largest community petitions seen in Southend in recent years.
The Green Councillors say they have backed the campaign and are calling on the Government to properly fund schools and community facilities so children do not lose vital opportunities such as learning to swim.
Coun Stuart Allen said: “North Street Swimming Pool is a much-loved community asset.
“It gives children an essential life skill, supports their health and wellbeing and plays an important role in school life.
“I understand the financial pressures schools are under, but they should never be forced into choosing between balancing the books and providing facilities that are vital to children’s education and wellbeing. This situation is the direct result of years of underfunding of public services.
“Across the country we’ve seen thousands of swimming pools close because communities simply cannot afford to keep them open. That should not be happening in one of the world’s wealthiest countries. Government choices are about priorities, and local communities deserve better.”
Coun Richard Longstaff added: “While we are asking the council to provide short-term support, we’re urging our local MP, David Burton-Sampson, to make the case within Government for the investment our schools and communities desperately need.
“Children should not lose opportunities because funding has failed to keep pace with reality.”
The petition asked Southend City Council to provide temporary financial support while a long-term solution could be developed. The Green councillors gave the petition their full support and reiterated their call for sustained investment in schools and community facilities to protect essential local services.
