RAYLEIGH Windmill has once again secured its place among England’s top visitor attractions after successfully retaining its Quality Assessed Visitor Attraction accreditation through VisitEngland’s Visitor Attraction Quality Scheme.
The 214-year-old Grade II listed landmark achieved an impressive overall quality score of 86%, recognising the high standards of visitor experience delivered at the historic site and its continued commitment to providing a welcoming, engaging and informative attraction for local residents and visitors alike.
Visitors can step inside the historic Windmill to explore exhibitions and displays that bring Rayleigh’s past to life. From the people and industries that helped shape the town to the fascinating history of the Windmill itself, there is plenty to discover. Visitors can also learn more about nearby Rayleigh Mount, enjoy changing exhibitions and take in views across the town from one of Rayleigh’s most iconic landmarks.
The VisitEngland assessment particularly recognised the exceptional customer care provided by volunteers, noting the friendly atmosphere they create and the engaging way they share the Windmill’s history with visitors. The report described the volunteers as knowledgeable and passionate, helping visitors gain a deeper understanding of both the building and the stories connected to it.
The national accolade is awarded following a rigorous assessment of attractions across England, with only those meeting VisitEngland’s quality standards achieving accredited status. This year, just 91 attractions nationwide received recognition through the scheme.
Coun Adi Malviya, Leader of Rochford District Council and Chair of the Strategy, Finance, Policy & Economic Development Committee, said: “We’re delighted that Rayleigh Windmill has once again been recognised by VisitEngland.
“This award reflects the hard work of our volunteers, whose enthusiasm and knowledge make every visit special. I’d encourage anyone who hasn’t visited before to come and explore this unique piece of local history, and for those looking to get involved in their community, volunteering at the Windmill is a rewarding way to help preserve its story for future generations.”
Rayleigh Windmill is open to visitors until the end of September on Wednesdays from 10am to 1pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 1pm to 4pm. Admission is free, with a suggested donation of £2 per person to support the ongoing upkeep of the historic site.
As well as being a popular visitor attraction, the Windmill also provides a unique and picturesque venue for weddings and special occasions.
