DAVID Burton-Sampson has been shown the progress being made at Chalkwell station, to make it accessible to everyone.
On a tour of the site, the MP for Southend West and Leigh saw the completion of the first steps towards the installation of the new platform lifts.
Mr Burton-Sampson said:” I am delighted to see the progress here.
“It is so important that this station becomes step free.”
The MP was shown the temporary footbridge that has been built to keep the station operational while work continues.
Christopher Nice, from c2c, explained that the changes are part of a wider scheme at the station, including its ramp replacement, that is being delivered by Network Rail and c2c.
Infrastructure Director, Joe Kennedy, on behalf of c2c and Network Anglia said: “We were really pleased to host David at Chalkwell station so he could see first-hand the development works which have taken place recently.
“The temporary footbridge and new walking routes will help us keep customers moving through the station while we carry out the next phase of the project safely.
“This is one of the enabling stages needed to create space for the new lifts and replacement footbridge, so passengers may start to see more visible changes at the station as the project moves forward. We look forward to welcoming David back later this year as the project progresses”
Mr Burton-Sampson said: “It was great to see first-hand accessibility measures moving forward at this station, particularly because of its proximity to the beach.
“I have been told how people travel long distances to come to Chalkwell, simply so that they can access the beach directly. So, it is vital they can get on and off the platforms easily.
“For too long Chalkwell has been one of the few stations on the c2c line without step-free access and it is really good news that we are finally on the way to this being put right.”
