Thames Dental Surgery, in London Road, had its planning application to Southend Council accepted, giving the green light to convert two self-contained flats into three dental treatment rooms.

This will increase the clinic from two to five surgeries, with an additional waiting area at the first floor. The second floor will feature a training room, office, and staff toilet.

The design integrates first and second floor accommodation with the existing dental surgery at the ground floor level.

The surgery is predominantly an NHS practice, with NHS work making up around 75 per cent of their turnover.

A spokesperson for the company said: “The existing local demand is not currently being met and in order to provide additional capacity, the practice needs to expand.

“Since Covid-19, the NHS dental service provision has been decimated, creating a backlog of need and putting immense pressure on the practices still providing these services.

“Therefore, accessible healthcare provision is something which needs to be supported by the local authority and we believe that this proposal would allow for this existing NHS practice to continue to serve the vital needs of the local community.”

The proposal also states that the increased clinic offering will add four new members of staff, which includes three dental nurses part-time, and a receptionist part-time.

There are currently five staff members full-time, and four dental nurses part-time working at the surgery.

The plans also state that there will be a small adaptation to the parking, whilst the additional members of staff will only work part-time, so the parking arrangements should be satisfactory to accommodate the proposed staffing.
